Background of Tournament
For 28 years, the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Federation and the United States Gay Open tennis tournament have donated thousands of dollars to numerous charities thanks to the generosity of our tournament sponsors. Last year we raised over $10,000. For 2008, our tournament beneficiariy is again the East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring youth program, an after school program providing inner-city students from kindergarten through high school with one-on-one tutoring and tennis skills. It's located right on the Stanford Campus. We look forward to helping this program again in 2008.
In addition, the GLTF of San Francisco also supports other charities year round. For 2008, we're working closely with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, a national organization formed in 1977 in San Francisco to advance the rights of all LGBT persons, and the 15th Street Public Tennis Courts Renovation Project, a really cool project to create a national historic site for the two public tennis courts in San Francisco, where the gay tennis scene has its origins.
Begun in 1981, the United States Gay Open is the longest-running tennis event of its kind in the world. It helped spark a boom in the gay sports field. In fact, the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Association now hosts more than 7,200 players in 39 tournaments across the globe each year, with over $100,000 raised for charities in 2008. For 2008, the USGO will be promoted to thousands of GLTA members around the world, including 430+ members in the Bay Area. The event draws more than 300 participants, both men and women of all skill levels, and scores of spectators from all over the country. The local press covers the tournament and our website receives thousands of hits each month leading up to the tournament.
