Background of Tournament
For 30 years, the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Federation and the United States Gay Open tennis tournament have donated tens of thousands of dollars to numerous charities thanks to the generosity of our tournament sponsors. In 2009, we raised over $7,000 for our tournament beneficiary, the East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring youth program, an after school program providing inner-city students from kindergarten through high school with one-on-one tutoring and tennis skills. It's located right on the Stanford Campus. In the 3 years as a USGO beneficiary, the East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring Program has received over $20,000. We look forward to helping this program again in 2010.

Begun in 1981, the United States Gay Open is the longest-running tennis event of its kind in the world. It helped spark a boom in the gay sports field. In fact, the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Association now hosts more than 7,200 players in 43 tournaments across the globe each year, with over $100,000 raised for charities in 2008. For 2009, the USGO was promoted to thousands of GLTA members around the world, including 500+ members in the Bay Area. The event draws more than 300 participants, both men and women of all skill levels, and scores of spectators from all over the country. The local press covers the tournament and our website receives thousands of hits each month leading up to the tournament.

The East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring is an after school program providing inner-city students from kindergarten through high school with one-on-one tutoring and tennis skills to promote

social, academic and life skills. The program has grown to over 100 students and an equal number of volunteers. In 1995, it was named by the Association of Tennis Professionals one of the top 10 inner-city youth tennis programs.
