World Team Tennis Recap:

from Carla McKay and Martha Ehrenfeld

It was three fun days of slight confusion, unique forms of on court hydrating and creative new rules. Once again I would like to thank the captains for leading the fun and making sure they had enough players to continue the madness. A special shout out to Team Lipskinka for always having enough players and Team Divine with their captain Barb always ready with mixed drinks, hula skirts and don't knock the bottle rules. We never did see Buck Naked take it all off but they did get close.

Elivis Herselvis clinched the right side of the draw. Britney Houston clinched the left side of the draw. As it is customary in a compass draw, the last matches are always the closest and it proved to be true Monday morning too. Thanks everyone for being part of World Team Tennis. We hope to see you all next year with more wigs and more cocktails!

Britney Houston V. Coco Peru: 20-19

Divine V. Buck Naked: 28-16

Miss Understood V. Lypskinka: 23-20

Elvis Herselvis V. Dante Di Franco: 23-20

30th Anniversary

The United States Gay Open turns 30 this year and we're celebrating in a big way. Past champions are receiving special invites to come back and relive their glory and plans are underway for the grandest USGO Tournament Party.  In addition to Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles and 40+ age events, we’re adding 50+ Senior events, and of course World Team Tennis returns.

Something really special is happening too–we’re staging the USGO Welcome Party on the 15th Street Tennis Courts, as we showcase their renovation by the City and dedicate the courts as a historic site for their role as our original “clubhouse” and the birth site of organized gay and lesbian tennis.

It’s North America’s largest LGBT tennis tournament–Get Registered! If you want to help with this year’s USGO, please join our volunteer tournament committee. Help is needed with fundraising, publicity, organizing, entertainment and much more. Contact Dave Campbell at: mailto:usgo@gltf.org

Telling GLTF’s History: Your Stories Wanted”

The United States Gay Open tennis tournament has come along way, as has our club and in fact the entire organized LGBT tennis movement. To celebrate this landmark, the GLTF is lobbing for the sky:
  • Inviting tennis celebrities and pros to attend
  • Designating the birthplace of the GLTF—the 15th Street tennis courts in San Francisco’s—as a historical site on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Staging the biggest USGO tournament party ever
Of course, it will take a gay village to make these things happen.

We are looking for stories about the GLTF’s origins, its history, events that led up to the formation of the GLTF, and events that have happened over the last 30 years that help us tell our story. Tell Your Story on the GLTF Blog

We would love hear about the obstacles and challenges you and other LGBT tennis players have overcome during the last 30 years.  Your story might be purely uplifting or perhaps it’s a tale of triumph over adversity from which we might draw inspiration. Collectively we have a compelling story to tell.  The GLTF is one important, but untold story in the larger gay sports movement and fight for equality.  Your accounts will help us remember where we’ve come, fuel other players’ excitement about this year’s USGO, and encourage our progress in overcoming hate and discrimination—all while having a gay old time.

(Plus, your remembrances will also help us make the case for including the 15th Street tennis courts in the National Historic Registry.)

To tell your story, visit the Blog page above, or email your story to usgo@gltf.org. If you have any questions about this request, feel free to contact Dave Campbell, USGO Tournament Director.
